I am researching GEORGE GARROD (or similar spellings) who was born in Great Ashfield, Suffolk about 1830 to Richard Garrod and wife, Susan. There is supposedly a marriage record for a George Garrod of Bosmere in 1852 but I cannot find any reference to one. Someone on another Suffolk board sent me the information. I am hoping that this George Garrod was the father of a George Garrard bc 1840-1853 in Great Ashfield. The younger George gave various ages on the Yorkshire censuses in 1881 through 1901.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated, Bettye

Sue, thank you for the response. I did further research on the Garrard (all spellings) of the Brosmere area of Suffolk and I have ruled out that George as the possible father of the one I am researching.

I am searching for a George Garrard whom was supposedly born btw 1849 & 1853 in Great Ashfield, Suffolk. At least, that is the place of birth listed for him on the 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses for West Yorkshire.

I have run the BMD on several websites, gone through more than 1000 entries on Ancestry.com without finding any listing for a birth in Ashfield or Great Ashfield. This is a PUZZLE !

Thanks, Bettye

Yes, George Garrard/Garrett married Nancy Pilling in March 1876 in Huddersfield. We assume it was the Huddersfield in West Yorkshire as that is where they lived after they married.

George does not show up on any 1861 or 1871 census that I have read. I ran his name on those UK censuses without finding him. He should have been about 12 yrs of age in 1861.

Thanks, Bettye in California

re the marriage of George GARRAD & Nancy PILLING.
Free BMD says it took place in the March quarter 1876 and that "The district Huddersfield spans the boundaries of the counties of West Riding of Yorkshire and West Yorkshire" Further information says that town Huddersfield was not transferred to West Yorkshire until 1974.

If you are assuming, then you do not have the marriage certificate? this would confirm his father's name, and perhaps give a more accurate idea of his age.

Christine, Yes, 'we are assuming'. Would you believe that I live in California and I am working on this George Garrard to help a man in Yorkshire ?
Rev was so nice to help me on a research project so when I read his post I responded to it. No one else has done so. We know that the marriage record will show the fathers of the couple but Rev's funds are limited so we have hoped to find George in a household in Ashfield, Suffolk.

Peculiar that this George Garrard does not come up on any UK census for 1861 & 1871. I have tried several methods of searching those censuses with zero success.

Thanks for your response, Bettye

Dear Bettye

I am looking for George Garrad, too. My husband is his great grandson. Did you find any details of his parents? I do not know if this is what happened to him but some people who were without work in the Suffolk area were made to move to the north for work in the mills. Hope this finds you!

Dear Susan

thank you for this. I am afraid I think this is not him. We have a cutting from the Huddersfield newspaper when he died in 1936, saying he was in his 90th year, so I assume he was born about 1846, although, as the last person said, his ages in different censuses are all over the place! Thank you for looking, though. It may be a relative of his????

Reading through your posts again, have you spelt garrad correctly. Garrod is a very common name in suffolk.
