Hi All,

I would be very grateful for some advice on where to begin to look for the death of a George FULLER.

The last listing I have for him is in the 1871 UK Census. He is married to Grace FULLER formerly STOKES, and they have several children together. His occupation is listed as a Sergeant in the Royal Marines. He is living in Chatham, Kent, England, which makes sense because of the dockyard.

He is dead, however, in 1879. I know this from a birth certificate of one of the children.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sarah

Two things Sarah,

1. Have you done a search for his death between 1871 and 1879 in order to obtain his death certificate? ....that seems the logical way to go.

2. The National Archives hold the records of the Royal Marines I believe. I obtained my father's record although he was in service during the early 1900's, which gives all of his service history. go here for more information: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/marines/?homepage=mh-marines

Hope this helps.

I second both of Glenys's points plus if you don't have any luck in finding the death in the civil registration indexes (FreeBMD is pretty well complete for that period), try the military/overseas indexes which are on http://www.findmypast.com/ and presumably other places.

I've looked on the full GRO index for 1878 & 1879, and he is not listed. As Peter says, he is probably on the Army deaths index.
But aren't you lucky having people in Medway? ;) It's the only area I know where you can view some of the original church records online. And for free!:D http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FZ4a_Medway_Ancestors%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList=

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your responses and suggestions. :-)

Unfortunately, I did look for the GRO index, and like Wirral, couldn't find him.
I also registered for FindMyPast, and couldn't find it there either.

Trying the National Archives now ... no luck so far, but have managed to find a crown courts reference to my grandad and two great uncles getting into a punch up in Medway in 1974. You learn new things every day!

I will continue the searches here. I am currently living in the Netherlands, so it's a bit difficult to visit the National Achives. I presume I can order what I want online, if I find it. At the very least it seems to be returning some interesting information. :-)

The Medway records are great. I have found a few baptisms, and I also found George and Graces marriage there. Maybe it'll be worth a search for George's death the Garrison church... Something I didn't think of. :-/

Thank you again

Sarah

For anyone with a missing soldier or marine it's worth looking in Malta

http://maltafamilyhistory.com/

There are indexes for several of the military cemeteries as well as Army Chaplain records.

I found my gggg-aunt buried in Ta'Braxia Cemetery, Valletta, Malta. She had been married to a Royal Artilleryman and had died whilst he was serving in Malta.

I don't think so :(

Actually, I'll be surprised if the death isn't in the military registers but if it isn't, your best bet is going to be the service records at the National Archives. Don't expect to find him included in the catalogue by name.

Unless you can zero in on at least the piece where his records should be, you'll have to engage someone to search for them.

Hi Peter,

You're right. I am clutching at straws. I can't find the death in the military registers, so I am sure I can convince a family member that they really do want to spend a few hours at the records office. :)

The Malta website is interesting. Thank you suedent.

In case you visit this thread again. I tkae it that the 1871 census entry is RG10/910 f52 p36; showing him aged 39 and born Uffington, Berks.

If this is he case, his attestation papers are now individually indexed on TNA's catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-5503208&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CGEORGE%2CFULLER&accessmethod=0) - if they are of interest, you can order a copy direct from TNA
