William Bowen emigrated to Australia in 1882. Shipping records indicate he was single at the time. In 1903, at the time of his second marriage, the certificate indicates he was a widower and that his wife died on 22 July, 1902. I can find no trace of this woman's details in the Vic. BDM yet I believe they were either living in Grant or South Melbourne, Victoria. Can anybody help? Many thanks bowennr

Hi,
I have found a marriage of Wm Bowen born North Wales to Flor (maybe Florence, Flora) Eva ROSS in 1889/ref 8145.
A death is listed for Flor Eva Bowen aged 37 in 1902. Place is Balt L A 1902/8043.
Found on Vic Federation & Edwardian bdm's.

Marianne,

I did not take this reference seriously earlier as Wm Bowen was born in Abersychan in Monmouthshire (South East Wales). Flicking back through an old Birthday Book, a gift to William Bowen around the time he emigrated, I see there is what looks to be an FE Bowen with a birth date of 14 October 1864. Flor may be the one - I will make some more enquiries along these lines. Thanks for making me look outside the square. Cheers bowennr.

The reverse marriage shows her name to be Florence Eva ROSS, born CORK (co Cork, Ireland)

Just wanted to check that you'd noted the place of death - it looks rather like it might have been at the Ballarat Lunatic Asylum. The Nominal Roll of the Ballarat Asylum up to 1907 is available at the PROV website:

Best wishes,

Lenore,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to thank you for your lookup. I have purchased the marriage certificate, found Flor Eva in a Rootsweb World Connect Tree whose owner happily swapped information and photos with me. All ended well. bowennr
