Can somebody please help me identify this uniform and Rank.
It appears to me to be an Officer and perhaps Cavalry but i'm only guessing.

Thank You
Tony

Sorry can't ID it, but could you blow up the following areas which might help,
cap badge
rank slides
lower left arm

Pity it is not colour, might be able to ID the medal ribbons.

Also, if you have a name and year, you can try the London Gazette online search for the medals award, that should give you the regiment.

Close up of the medal ribbon, even in Black and white might help to identify what medals had been awarded, and thus a year.

If you can get a high res scan that would help. I've been able to identify a couple of other photos for folk, so don't see that this will be too difficult if we can get a better image.

Tony

He is a Staff Officer. If you look closely at his cap you will see a broad band around it which would have been red for those serving on the general staff although some officers holding staff appointments would wear a band specific to their corps, such as the RAMC for instance. The badge is a crown surmounted by a lion. Close scrutiny of the lapels shows that he is wearing gorget tabs. On his right arm he appears to be wearing a brassard, the colours of which would have indicated his job. If only he would shuffle around a bit.....

Thanks for your informative help, so far.
Here;s the rub,
This image was sent to me from the UK in the hope I may be able to identify the person. It came from the belongings of my Uncle and is now in the posession of his daughter (my cousin).

We are trying to establish the identity of our Grandfather, who was unknown to us and possibly to our Fathers.
This pic is just one avenue in the search.
I have requested a Higher Resolution scan and scans of the requested areas.

Thanks again you guys are a great Help and I appreciate your time and trouble.

I think you mean Tony, and just out of interest, I am a moderator on the forum you give a link to. Don't be taken in by the spurs. The British Army was largely horse drawn in WW1 and the majority of officers knew how to ride, even in infantry units. Without wishing to to the dampers on anything, without further information it will take a minor miracle to name him. The cap badge is that of a staff officer with a rank below that of General officer.

Hi Terry
Yes I agree we have an enormus task that may fail, there is a chance that he is not even a relation. Uncle was a chauffer so who knows why he had this pic, it may be just his favourite employer, but you know how genealogy is, wheb\n there's little hope try everything.

So this is the cap badge, shoulder arrangement and medal ribbon to the best ability of my cousins scanner.

Thanks for your help and advice, we both appreciate it.
Tony
