Hi,
One of my relatives ran a pub in Bedfordshire from 1903-22. Does anyone know how old you had to be to hold the licence?
I had a look and can't find anything but I suppose at least 21. You should be able to find them on the 1901 census though.
By the way, the police kept records of licensed houses. You'd have to check where they're held for your area but in mine they're held at the local library. They list the name and address of the pub, the type of license, names of tenants and the dates they ran the pub (as well as listing the death if they died whilst landlord), the owner of the pub and their address (usually a brewery) and convictions.
Included in the description of license are licenses for music and games and date the license was granted. The convictions are usually things like supplying during non permitted hours or permitting drunkenness. Next to the crime is a punishment (e.g. fined £5), the date and the name of the landlord who comitted the offence.
Oates, does this apply to the late 1800's aswell?
I have an ancestor who was a licensed victualler in about 1890 in London and he remained in pubs all of his life. Although, I'm not sure how many he ran and how many he just worked for.
Thanks
Alison

Yes. The 3 pubs I have records for started 1887 for dates of tenants but some of the convictions are earlier. When I was looking through the microfiche some were earlier than that. In London, they might go back even further.
Thanks:) You learn something every day!

FFHS publish a booklet to help with these sorts of queries: Victuallers' Licences Records for Family & Local Historians, Gibson & Hunter. It lists all known licencing records and their location from 1552 (the date of the first licencing act). There's also a short bibliography.
For Bedfordshire in the early 1900s you need the petty Sessions records; they're kept at the Bedford RO.
