Help, Griffith's around Monmouthshire in 1800's!

Hi, I need help with a look up.

I need to find more info on Rachel Griffiths.
She was born circa 1857, in Monmouthshire.
She married William Hodges in Bedwellty Oct-Dec 1875.

On the 1881 census living in Trelyn, Bedwellty
William Hodges 34 Coal Miner Bedwellty
Rachel Hodges 26 Bedwellty
Elizabeth Hodges 2 Bedwellty

On the 1861 census living on Bryn Brith Farm?, Tredegar
Edward Griffiths 38 Coal Miner Aberystwyth
Susan Griffiths 34 Bedwellty
Mary Griffiths 11
Elizabeth Griffiths 9
Rachel Griffiths 6
Shadrack Griffiths 3
Thomas Griffiths 4 months

Elizabeth Rees, 19, is a servant.


I can't work out the correct Rachel on the 1871 census, nor can I find Edward or Susan on the 1851 census.

Also the only marriage I can can find which fits Edward and Susan is registered Jul-Sep 1846, between Edward Griffiths and Susannah Mosis, in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.

Could anyone point me in the right direction please. I would be most grateful!

Hello Beth,

I think the marriage you found is the right one, because I take this to be the father in law with them in 1871. Shadrack is there, an unusual enough name to suggest this is the right family, also Elizabeth, Rachel, Shadrack and Thomas are all the right ages, in the same order.

Edward Griffieth 28 head mar collier b Mon Aberstruth (?) and yes, it looks like that in the original too, but I think it was the enumerators attempt at a phonetic Aberyswyth

Several Moses households in the same street, including one next door.

Incidentally, in the 1871 census Tredegar is down as being in the Registration district of Bedwelty. I noticed in this census the Reg District for Tredegar is shown as being Abergavenny, though the Civil Parish is still Bedwelty. The boundaries must have changed? Just thought it might help you reconcile the 1846 marriage being in Abergavenny Reg district.

Aberystruth was in Monmouthshire, now known as Nantyglo, neighbouring Brynmawr which is Breconshire ;)

So Aberystruth, now Nantyglo, is only 5 or 6 miles from Rhymney and Tredegar then? It makes a bit more sense in a way, and I did wonder why Aberyswyth was down as being in Monmouthshire!

I do still think its the same family, just one of those interesting little stumbling blocks...

It makes sense for them to be the same family. I'm going to go and have a chat to my dad about some certs to be on the safe side.
