hi
ive traced my family tree back to the 1600s in i believe great accuracy and information

but one member of my family eludes me

WILLIAM JOSEPH SMITH born c1873 arried sophia willis in daventry register office in 1904 and they settled in long buckby northants, sophia died in 1914 and the children (4) were divided between aunts to bring up

family info states he joined the local northants regiment went off to fight, returning at the end of the war------made a quick visit to the aunts and dissapeared never to be heard of again

there are a number of smith who fit the criteria being born in northampton---but he could have been born anywhere-----he was residing in long buckby at his time of marriage

In the 1891 Census there was a William Smith born about 1871.
He was a soldier in the 1st Northampton Regiment and he was in the barracks at Aldershot.
Class: RG12; Piece: 567; Folio 59; Page 30

Sorry I know very little about regiments, try a google search.

This is one of the many sites that appear.
http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/048Nhant.htm

I found the information at Ancestry for the census,
try here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/

Obviously very difficult to tell if he is your relative.

If there's a military connection, it would be worth reading the National Archives research guides at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?

The relevant ones will be under "British Army". Taking into account hearsay and suspicions, perhaps an avenue of research will suggest itself.

There doesn't appear to be a WW1 medal card for William Joseph Smith, Northants Regiment.
