I'm in Australia and cannot nip to the National Archives or local church or other such places to search for info on my ancestors! Can anyone suggest some websites that have good online searches? Or any organisations that give good assistance without breaking the bank (the horror exchange rate!) ?? I have potentially found info on my Co. Durham COWEY family using census records but where/how do you search prior to those records being kept?

This forum has a 'new posts' feature, therefore your post is likely to be seen by lots of people, not just the ones that visit each specific forum. I have replied to this on your other identical post.

Summer, you dont say where in Vic you are, but unless you are in Woop Woop there is a fair chance you are near an LDS Family History Centre, where you can access films of a large number of British parish registers.

And if you need access to census records (1841/61/71) - British Origins have a very good deal where you pay once for 3, 6 or 12 months and you can access their census records as often as you need to. I found British Origins to be a VERY good deal - so much better than Ancestry - and a heck of a lot more accurate as well.

You can also try freecen for other census records although those are not complete yet.

You could also try Ancestry, You may find it free or it may be better to take out a subscription. Ancestry is the host with many affiliates. It all depends on where the majority of your search is. New Zealand also has aussie records. Google Australian genealogy. Good luck!

Hi Summer

I'm also in Australia, Far Nth Queensland to be exact and I find this web site to be very useful for pre 1837 parish records. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle

Give it a go too

Genes Reunited is reasonably priced. Note however, that it is an information exchange where people upload their trees which you can them search to try and match names of your own.
