What kind of information do you need to search for service records of ww1 military folk, or how do you go about trying to find if any of your family joined up

Depends on which service - Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army or RFC/RAF.

Have a look through TNA's research guides
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp?j=1

(For army, look under 'British Army')

Medal cards can be downloarded from Documents Online, as can RN service records.

To identify a record, you normally need a name, date of birth, place of birth.

Many Army service records were destroyed or damaged by fire in WW2.
