I have documents for a property on the Island, Westgate Street dated 1826 and 1840. The site (between the Gloster Flour & Bread Co and Mr Hepwoods Boat Yard) had been developed into 19 tenenments in 1840 and I have a list of 14 of the tenants. One of these is Thomas Taylor - can anyone find him in the 1841/51 census returns?
Thanks

There is this family (including a Thomas) who are at St Nicholas, Gloucester in the 1841 census - any good?

HO107/379/9, folio 43, page 34
Island Dobbins Yard

Francis TAYLOR 45 Tailor Born in county yes
Elizabeth do 40 yes
Elizabeth do 20 yes
Lucy do 15 yes
Thomas do 15 yes
John do 15 yes
Margret do 10 yes
Ann do 8 yes
Henry do 5 yes
Harriet do 3 yes
Mary do 1 yes

He is the only Thomas/Thos TAYLOR I can find in Gloucester.

This could be the same Thomas in the 1851 of St Nicholas, Gloucester:

HO107/1961, folio 317, page 47
3 Normans Row

Thomas TAYLOR Head Mar 30 Ship Carpenter Gloucester
Elizabeth do Wife Mar 28 Nurse do
Francis do Son 5 Scholar do
Thomas do Son 4 do do

Hope this helps.

To be listed as the tenant I would have thought he would have been the head of the household.

On the 1826 deeds I have a William Taylor whose later business in Shrewsbury was advertised as "established 1830" so he obviously didn't stay. Any other Taylors on the Island in 1841 who may have been left behind?

This could be your William TAYLOR on HO107/379/9, folio 30, page 7, Island, Prices Yard Island:

William TAYLOR 25 Ag Lab Born in county yes
Louissa do 20 yes

Also an Elizabeth TAYLOR on HO107/379/9, folio 41, page 30, Island:

Thomas MCLEAN 40 Miller Born Ireland
Mary do 15 Born in county yes
Elizabeth TAYLOR 20 F.S. yes

There is also this couple in St Bartholomews Hospital:

HO107/379/10, folio 24, page 3

Richard TAYLOR 63 Cabinet Maker J Born in county yes
Mary do 54 yes

No other TAYLORs on the Island apart from Francis and his family and the writing is beautifully clear so I don't think I have missed any. Would you like me to check St Nicholas Westgate Street for any TAYLORs as well?

My William would have been tobacco pipe maker born Shropshire. The children that I know of were William jnr born Birmingham 1816, Mary born Birmingham 1818, Elizabeth born Gloucester 1824, John born Gloucester born 1826 and Thomas born Gloucester 1827. The first two children were baptised Birmingham 1822 and the last three at St Nicholas Gloucester. I have both Williams, Elizabeth and Thomas later in Shrewsbury but no sign of Mary or John.
I also don't have deaths for William snrs parents Thomas & Jane Taylor - their last child was born Broseley Shropshire 1800 then they disappear. They would have traded down the Severn to Gloucester & Bristol.

Any more Taylors you can dig up the merrier!

Here we go then:

HO107/379/9, folio 15, pages 24/25 on Upper Quay Lane a George TAYLOR, aged 45, Tailor, born in county, wife Ann, aged 45, not born in county and children Eliza 15, Emma 15, Ellen 10, Thomas 10, all born in county.

HO107/379/10, folio 5, page 4
Westgate St, Stephens Yard

William TAYLOR 25 Lab Born in county yes
Charlotte do 20 yes
John do 5 yes
Sarah do 1 yes

Folio 9, page 12
Swan Lane

William TAYLOR 40 Labr Born in county yes
Elizabeth do 40 yes

These are the only families I can find in St Nicholas and none of them look relevant to you. Sorry not to be of more help.

Guess they all moved en masse to Shrewsbury with John & Mary going off their own separate ways. Is it possible to list the tenants in 1841? The premises was opposite Sabrina Cottages with only the boat builders yard between it and Westgate Bridge,
In 1840 I have:(From Westgate Street going backwards towards the river)
William Griffen Harmer
(Yard then Brewhouse)
Thomas Taylor
Joseph Yalle?
Edward Fletcher
George Hartshorn
William Hewish
Joseph Griffiths
(Court)
William Vaughan
William Evans
Robert Peperall?
William Bridgman?
George Boycott?
George Hepwood
William Pear????
5 vacant tenements
(Stable and yard)
Sorry some of the writing is difficult to read.

It looks as though your names are listed under Wilkins Buildings, The Island:

1 Unoccupied
George HARTSHORN 40 Water m Born in county no
Richard JONES 50 Water m yes
1 Unoccupied
Joseph GRIFFITHS 40 Lab no
William HEWISH 30 Ag Lab yes
John VAUGHAN 80 no
(William VAUGHAN 25 Water m not born in county in same household)
William EVANS 25 Carpet Wr J no
1 Unoccupied
Robert PEPPERILL 40 Basket Mr yes
George BENNETT 55 Collar Maker J yes
Ester HIPWOOD 45 Nurse yes
James PROBARDS 20 Ag Lab yes
John GREENING 60 Ag Lab yes
2 Unoccupied
John SMART 30 Water m yes
Elizabeth SMITH 30 Nurse yes
William HARMAN 45 Wheelwright yes

The next household is then classed as Castle Meadow which is a James PRENDERGAST 35 Ag Lab yes and the households after that are Sabrina Cottages.

Hope this clarifies things and let me know if I can be of further help.

I have found William & Mary in the 1841 of St Julian, Shrewsbury:

HO107/926/10, folio 46, page 27
Longden Coleham

William TAYLOR 50 Pipe m Born in county no
Mary do 50 no
Elizabeth do 15 no
Thomas do 13 no
Sarah POWER 15 F.S. yes

And this looks like William jnr in the 1841 of St Julian:

HO107/926/10, folio 45, page 25
Coleham

William TAYLOR 20 Pipe m yes
Ann do 20 yes
William do 1 yes

However, I can't find John at all - perhaps he died prior to the 1841 census and Mary could have married or also died. As William snr died before 1861, have you thought of trying to find a will for him which might give you clues as to whether John was still alive and whether Mary & Elizabeth married.

I'm afraid none of the family left wills! This was to cause a lot of family discontent when William snr died! You are correct in finding them in Coleham. William snr's wife Mary was born Bristol, Somerset in 1787 but I have no maiden name and no marriage. I suspect it was in Birmingham but there are too many William & Marys and I believe there are no banns for St. Martins which is where William jnr was baptised - hence no record of occupation to pinpoint which one is right. None of the many possible Marys can be found in Somerset! I can only hope someone else is researching another family and their Mary married my William.
