I need a fresh pair of eyes on this one. I'm trying to trace the BMD for my father's aunt and cousin. Auntie was Bertha SANDS, who is supposed to have been born 14/3/1888 in Sunderland and then married someone with the surname LYLE. Their son was called Douglas LYLE. The only record I could find was for the death of Douglas Sands LYLE in Croydon in 2003, which gives his dob as 31/3/1920. It seems too much of a coincidence in names for this not to be the right Douglas, but so far I have been unable to find his birth record. I was hoping that Douglas's birth cert would give me his father's name, so I could find Bertha's marriage. I've trawled all through 1907-1920, but no sign of a Sands/Lyle marriage. Nor can I find Bertha's birth in 1887/88, so I'm wonder if it was her middle name, which she used. In the 1891 census she is listed as Martha W!! In 1901 she is Birtha. I will obviously check again, but if anyone has a few minutes to cast a second glance I would be very grateful. |banghead|

Thank you Julie and Ann!! :D I had got as far as Martha Walker Sands, then had to hand over the computer to hubby for an Ebay bid, so did not go any further. I wonder why on earth she was known as Bertha??! Mind you her sister Violet was known as Poppy. Don't you just hate those knicknames! I've also no idea where the Walker bit came from - her mother was a WOOLLEY. Now I just have to find Douglas - maybe he was born earlier than I thought.

Thanks again.
