Apparently the hole in my Grandad's throat was not caused by a bullet or other weapon but was the result of an operation he had to cure the effects of gas poisoning. It seems that doctors had to thread a pipe,presumably into his lungs or stomach, via his throat. So Terry, it looks less likely that William Pinchcombe is my man but will still follow that up.
Also, it would seem that my Grandad didn't want to go to the Western Front at all and tried to hide from the army and that eventually the Military Police were sent to take him away. I do not know at this stage whether he was trying to avoid conscription or whether he was trying to avoid going back after a period of convalescence at home? I can see a whole new area of research opening up for me as my WW1 history is very rusty. Any advice greatly appreiciated
