I am struggling to find any information on my Grandfather's military history.
Henry/Harry Summerling was born 1880 in Felmersham, Bedfordshire and that is where he is on the 1891 census with his grandmother. My next sighting of him is in Kettering, Northampton in 1918 when he married my grandmother.
(I do not know how to find out if he was in the boer war in 1901)
I downloaded a medal card for a Henry Summerling but it says this chap is in the Royal Highlanders. Would a man from Bedfordshire, (possibly living in Kettering) join the Royal Highlanders? I have googled but found nothing about the Royal Highlanders recruitment policies in WW1.
He was a 'Market Gardener' and I have wondered if this was a reserved occupation and he never went to war.
Should I just try and obtain the WW1 records for this chap and see if he is my grandfather?
Any advice, comments appreciated.
