Hi everyone...My maternal ancestors were called Knott, from Wrawby,Brigg and Winteringham. I have managed to trace the family back to 1694 with the help of various Knott family members. Most of the Knott males were lightermen, I just want to know the history of this craft and if anyone knew the Knott family

I would suggest that you google for 'lightermen', although most of the references appear to be about the lightermen on the Thames. The job itself should still basically be the same though.
