I am trying to find out about John Steadman POTTER who was born in Rotherhythe in 1813. I have traced him to Tasmania where he was Master of a couple of ships sailing in Australian waters in the 1830's. I am trying to find out when he sailed to Australia and in what capacity. Sadly, the maritime records for Sydney for that period were lost (so I'm told) so I can only try to find out from the source, that is from the UK. I am presuming he has Master's papers which he must have got from somewhere. Can anyone suggest where I might look for seaman's records?
