When a distant relative of my mother died her husband was granted Letters of Administration. He was described as a Retired Potcherman.
This was in 1961 so I don't think it is a mis-transcription as I first thought, as it appears thus in the Index at the Probate Office.
There is a hint in the OED that a 'potcher' might have something to do with paper-making. They lived at Northfleet, Kent.
Is there anyone who can supply the correct explanation?
Thanks, FredP.

He was described as a Retired Potcherman.
Bleacher (paper industry, as you guessed).
