Poor law records have revealed that a child born out of wedlock was "boarded out" when she was almost 2 years old to a family in Aberdeenshire (from Glasgow). Can anyone shed any light on what this means? Does this equate to fostering?

Yes. Boarding out was what we now usually call fostering. Some unions - particularly in inner city areas - appear to have had a policy of boarding out children in somewhat more rural areas.

Hi Lisa,

You can read about the 'Boarding-Out' arrangements made for children here:

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?cottagehomes/cottagehomes.shtml

Scroll down to the last section at the bottom of the page. Scotland is also mentioned.

Best wishes

If she was from Glasgow there may be some Poor Law Records which are in the Archive section of the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.
I have read some gems there & found out about rellies I didn't know I had.
If you are not near to Glasgow I think they will search for you(how much & how long I am not sure)
Also try TalkingScot for help with your Scottish rellies.
