Thanks Christine
I've had a look at the site and it does seem to say that births weren't registered in New York state until 1881 so maybe it's not possible to get one for 1859, maybe it's too early however I will just keeping looking

You won't get a birth certifiacte for New York for 1859 - unless this was a British birth and registered with a British consulate. Do you know if it is New York City, or New York state? - and if it is in the state, do you know which county?

Hi Fiona,

Geoffers is correct. Your best hope of finding birth records is via church records. For example, if you suspect that your relative was Episcopalian you could try http://buffalolore.buffalonet.org/episcopal/episcopalarchives.htm.

If you go to that page and scroll down, there is the name and address of the archivist for the church. You could write and ask them for info if they have it.

Also, if you know have an approximate idea of when and where he died, his death record may contain the information you are seeking. This is assuming that he died after the 1880s, when records were kept.
