I am looking for any information on the Hoyle family of St Columb Major - especially Annie Hoyle (born second quarter of 1879).

She was the daughter of James and Ellen Hoyle, sister to Emma Alma, Mary Walter, Herbert, Harry, Ivy, Ellen and William

If anyone has any information on Annie I would be grateful, I know she was in Manchester in 1920 where she gave birth to a son, but that's all I know

Emma Alma died in Eastbourne in 1969

Hi Jamie,
I am emailing you with details of this family. Here is a taster. :) James Hoyle married Ellen Rooks on 23 Oct 1870 in St Columb Major and they had 8 children. Annie's grandparents were Jabez Hoyle & Margaret(born Merthyr Tydfill) and Henry Rooks and Jane Chappell married 12 Feb 1850 in St Columb Major. Henry was born in Tiverton, Devon.

Thanks for the taster .... is there a main course??

The reason for my interest in the family is that Annie Hoyle was my grandmother, I have found lots of information about her sister Emma (who was staying with the Rooks at census time 1901) but can find nothing about Annie apart from the fact that she's my father's mother

My father was adopted into the family that Emma Alma had married into, and he then changed his surname - so by lineage I'm actually a Hoyle hence my need to know more. Given James and Ellen had 8 children it's logical I may have many distant relatives out there!

If you can tell me any more I'd be grateful

Would you have any dates or birthplace for Jabez Hoyle? I've lost a Jabez after the 1871 Lancashire census. Thank you for any help!

Is this your man?
Deaths Mar 1874 HOYLE Jabez 38 Haslingden 8e 102

Have you tried using wildcards to search? eg. Jab* Hoyle. This will eliminate any transcription errors, "z" is commonly misread.

Alternatively use just the firstname, approximate age and birthdate. I have come across "H" being misread as "K" and vice-versa.

Thank You, I think this might very well be him. In the 1871 Jabez 35 -is listed as living with his Sister and her second Husband (John Heys) along with two children from her previous marriage (Richard & John Read). Her husband William Read vanishes after 1851 but before 1861.

Thank You again.

Sorry to put a spanner in the works but the Jabez who was in St Columb Major in the other censuses was also there in 1871 aged 58 and a medical herbalist. I think I sent you the tree Steve

Hi Jamie,
No not related but if it is the Medical Herbalist Jabez you mean who married Margaret from Merthyr Tydffil, I have all the census details on the family
