Do you know for sure of there being a medal?

Not sure if there was. He died from injuries obtained when a bomb exploded
on the 31 May 1915. He never served abroad. in the death index it says he
died in Hartley W. Any idea where this is, or if there was a military hospital
in this area?

thanks for your help

Hartley Wintney is a registration district in Hampshire. You need the death certificate to find out precisely where he died.

There is also a Hartley Westpall in Hants. see here:

Edit: Sorry, missed your reply to Peter, obviously the Death Cert, will give you the place.

If the death index referred to is the GRO index then Hartley W is Hartley Wintney reg dist.

Hartley Westpall is a parish in the Basingstoke reg dist.
