Would appreciate a look up please for John Hills, born 1828/1829 in Hoddesdon.

Hi Twig,

I checked the 1851 folio's 43 to 107 on Piece 1705 without success.
The film quality is not brilliant so may have missed him, but don't think so.

Thanks for your efforts Steve. John Hills' dob is very confusing. On the 1861 census it is given as 32, in 1871 43 and in 1881 50! I do now have a copy of his marriage certificate (1853) stating that he was 'of full age' and residing in the Parish of All Saints and St.John's, Hertford at that time, and his father's name was William. John was living in Cambridge by 1861. If you were able to have another look some time it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Twig,

Went through Hoddesdon again, plus did St John Hertford & All Saints Hertford, both seperate parishes without success.

Your best bet is to get the census CD's, I do not think Rod is producing any 1851's for a while, but you can get it from a small outfit in Canada at a reasonable cost for the quality, email me direct for the address (I have no connection).

HiTwig,
Came across your enquiry almost by accident, and had to wonder if you'd now sorted it?? Wih most of the censuses being readily available on line your search may be more fruitful now :)
Shout up if you're still stuck.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for your offer but, yes, I did track down my John Hills eventually - I bought the 1851 Herts census and went right through it only to discover that, as a railwayman, he was in Stratford, Essex on census night!!

All the best
