The National Maritime Museum
http://www.nmm.ac.uk/
has a large collection of historic photos, you can search their database to see what is available.

The Navy List is quite a good way of viewing commissioned and senior warrant officers.

My grandfather's brother John Fleming was a member of the crew on this ship HMS Powerful until 1901. I got his full navy records by going into the National Archives website, choosing Military History then Royal Navy. Once I had located him and identified him by place of birth I got this record for about £3.50 if I remember correctly. It is excellent. Now my difficulty is to find out what happened to him after that. Did he emigrate, marry and stay in England instead of coming back to Scotland, die? Does anyone out there know or know how I could find out. The usual sources on scotlandspeople are not producing anything.
