Hi,
I am tracking down my ancestors who were the Law family in the Sedgley area in the 18th. century, spreading to places such as Wolverhampton,Trysull, Compton and finally Birmingham through the 19th.century.They were a Roman Catholic family and were shown in some of the recusant lists that I have come across.

Hi -

I wasn't sure what information you had, whether you needed any information, or whether you were just stating your interest in the name generally. I have Southall ancestors in the Sedgley area as well and I have access to a number of resources that you may not have come across.

Have you identified all Law entries in Sedgley from the 1851 census:
2030 – 20, 25, 38, 69, 88, 121, 130,150, 183, 248, 312,433,441 Dudley - Sedgeley
2031 – 107, 222, 243, 542 Dudley - Sedgeley

I also have some other resources that might help.

Thanks

Hi Lisa
l am researching my husbands side of Powney's in Lower Gornal.
On the 1851 census
William 40 head.pauper coal miner.
Hannah 41 wife.
John 14 son labourer in pits (husbands g/grandfather)
Lydia 12 dau
Sarah 8
Phoebe 6
William 3
David 8mths
On the 1861 Hannah turns up in Dibdale as a widow with only Sarah Phoebe spelled Phebe. William and David in the surname Pauntney/Pountney.
There is no sign of them on the 71/81 on the 91 John turns up married to Emma with sons John Henry aged 15 b. Norton Canes and Arthur Lewis aged 9 born Burton upon Trent.
l have tried searching for John Henry and Arthur Lewis on the 1901 but nothing.
Can you give me some suggestions to track these elusive ancestors.
Regards Pam
