Padlock??

Can someone tell me why there is a padlock icon on the left of all the threads and forums?
I thought the padlock showed that the thread was locked but obviously not so on here as I am using it.
Just a curiosity question.

Ok it's just answered itself. When you are not signed in there is a padlock and when you are there is not. doh
