I started trying to trace my Family History, going down my mother's side of it, I got as far as her mother and father and then came to a full stop, a big full stop. And now don't know where to go. I found her mother registered on the 1901 Census as living with her husband and children in West Kirby Wirral:

Patrick McFallon - head - age 42 - b: Ireland - Occ - Cab Driver.
Winefred McFallon(nee Burton) -wife- age 31 - b:Herefords Ross

At some time the name was changed from Fallon to McFallon, I found her death cert at Family Record Centre, she died in 1912, but cannot find any record of a marriage between them. The only Winefred Burton I can find in Herefordshire married a Charles Cecil in 1894, when my Winefred was in West Kirby (I presume) with 2 children, she went on to ave another six.
Can anyone help please. would be grateful for any advice on which direction to go now
Thanks in anticipation
Patip

Thanks for that Rod, I did find all that, but still can't find where or whom she married, was on to the H.F.H.S and they ordered and sent me copy of her birth cert. 29 - 8 -1868 which states she was registered in Ledbury, but does not supply where born other than woolhope

copy of her birth cert....does not supply where born other than woolhopeIn rural areas, it is normal to just have the parish registered as place of birth. You won't often find any greater detail as to an address.

The only Winefred Burton I can find in Herefordshire married a Charles Cecil in 1894, when my Winefred was in West Kirby (I presume) with 2 childrenFrom this I assume that her first two children were born before 1894. The 1891 census show sher as still single - RG12/2053 f102 p6 living with her mother. So she ought to have married sometime between the 1891 census and the birth of her first child - BUT - you will find occasions when couples lived together, sometimes for several years, before marrying. So you might want to spread the time period in which you are searching for a (hoped for) marriage. Have you been able to find the first two children's births recorded in the GRO index? Have you been searching the full GRO index for entries - or the freebmd partial transcript?

Hi Geoffers
Yes I have the details of children, found on FreeBMD, but the Mc was not recorded, they were all born in West Kirby,Wirral, Cheshire.
Neale Fallon -b- Sept qrt 1892
Mary Winefred - b- Sep qrt 1893
John Edward -b- Sep qrt 1895
Walter James -b- Jun qrt 1897. there were 3 more children who were not registered officially, I found them in church baptism records which also gave Winefreds maiden name but no record of marriage

Flummoxed

Woolhope is a very tiny hamlet just outside Ledbury in Herefordshire. I have been there several times, but not for some years. Certainly everyone living there (very few) would have known each other and I doubt any of them had any sort of address other than Woolhope.

I'd get the birth certificate of the child who is your direct ancestor, otherwise you will not know for certain who their parents were.

Have you looked at the Liverpool Trade Directories to see if Patrick is listed?

When were these baptisms?

When you write "found them in church baptism records which also gave Winefreds maiden name" - is only a mother recorded, or was the father recorded too?

You say that you've used freebmd, have you searched the full GRO index?

As mentioned by Wirral, you do need that birth certificate (unless you already have it).

Hi To All who are offering me help
My direct ancestor is my mother who was not registered at birth,I could only find her birth details in the church records where she was baptised, that church was dedicated in 1897 so could not gain any information before that of the family, my Mother was not born until 1904 and had two younger brothers who also were not legally registered, have been to Kew Archives and also National Records Office in London and found nothing in either place. The baptisim records show both Mother and Father's names as Patrick McFallon and Winefred McFallon nee Burton
The 1901 census:
Patrick McFallon -Head-b-Ireland
Winefred McFallon-Wife- b-Herefords, Ross
Then five children born and registerd West Kirby Wirral before my Mother was born
