My Great Grandfather William Lloyd Tayler STEEL (sometimes shown with an 'E') was born in Greenwich, Kent in 1857. Census returns from 1871 onwards show him as living in Surrey but I cannot find him in either Kent or Surrey for 1861.

I have searched under various spellings of his surname and parts of his given names (one Census he is only recorded as Lloyd).

Any ideas where I can look for him in 1861? My ideas are exhausted?

Therra

Could you let us have the reference to the 1871 census where you have found your great grandfather.

It may hold information that could help find him in an earlier census.

Thank you for responding to my message.

I BELIEVE that this is my Great Grandfather in the 1871 Census.

"Residence shown as Earls Wood Road, Reigate Foreign, Surrey. Shown as a pupil. Birth place shown as London Middlesex.
Ref: RG10/831 Folio 35 Page 11"

On his marriage certificate he shows his address as Willesden, SRY.

In 1881 his name is given as Lloyd with the following information: Residence shown as 72 Poplar Walk Road.
The building was a lodging house.
Occupation shown as Draughtsman (Artizan)
Ref: RG11/621 Folio 54 Page 7

What evidence do you have that he was born in Greenwich, Kent?

I note in the 1871 census you refer to, it gives his place of birth as Middlesex, London.

If this information is correct then there are a couple of possibilities in the 1861 census.

His birth certificate shows the registration Distrcit of GREENWICH and the sub-district of Saint Pauls Deptford in the Counties of Kent and Surrey.
