In researching Fryer and Lewis ancestors in the Delamere area, I've come across a curious piece of information and wonder if anyone can throw any light on it. On the 1881 census my Fryers were living at Leathers Cottages, Oakmere. It looks as though there were about 27 of these cottages, presumably owned by the Leather family at Delamere Lodge. The curious thing is that some of the cottages were occupied by single male agricultural labourers born in 'Hungary Austria'( I think there were about 7 of them.)
There must be a story here. Does anyone know what it is?

Only 7 of them in Oakmere? That's nothing, there are 132 in the village of Over, Cheshire in 1881! Most have one of the following surnames: Andross, Dura, Michal, Yanko or Yanoss. This has got me intrigued as well. :)

The Austrians at Over were salt miners - Cheshire is the salt-mining centre of the UK. Saltzburg in Austria also has large mines, so maybe there was a shortage of skilled (or cheap) labour in Cheshire in the 1880s & they brought in foreign workers.
