View Full Version : Listing of ship owners and other questions

Do anyone know if there is a searchable listing of ship owners anywhere which would include 1850 to 1860?

In 1852 would Peru have been a possible stop on route from England to Hong Kong?

Is there anywhere that it is possible to search deaths at sea during the period 1850 to 1860? Where would they be registered? The ship was sailing from China to England, would it be registered at the post of arrival in England?

Many thanks and regards

LDS Family History Centres have access to a microfilm #1419469 that chronicles births, deaths and marriages at sea for the period 1854-1871. Might be worth a look. There may be a family history centre near you. You can locate it by checking their website www.familysearch.org.

If you ever locate a listing for shipowners, I'd love to hear about it. I'm looking for a few from my husband's line that were settled in Padstow, Cornwall. I believe they were allowed to list their occupation as a shipowner if they simply owned shares in the voyages and this was common practice among the officers in the Merchant Navy. Good luck in your searching.

It would be worth looking at the research guides for the National Maritime Museum

The index of deaths at sea can be viewed at 1837online. Certificates can be ordered from GRO in the usual way.

Shipping movements in The Times may yield something.

The book "Tracing Births, Deaths and Marriages at Sea (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_4825.html)" would be useful
