Hi all, I am in the process of researching my wifes family history, we know that they were in Chrishall in Essex and possibly Chishill in Essex (confused, i certainly am)?

The family name was Cane, we are as far back as Josiah Cane born 1807 died 1888, from Chrishall. We have searched on Ancestry but it is difficult to get beyond the early 1800's. There are several possibilities on that site but we are at a stop for now. It is possible we have found Josiah's mother, Sarah, who in the 1841 census returns is down as being aged 65, born in 1776, and a farmer. She is down as the head of the household. Also living with her are George, b.1806, Abel, b. 1811 and George, b.1826. My assumption is that Sarah was the mother to George 1 and Abel, but if George 2 is the son of George 1, where is the wife/mother? Also, we presume Josiah is a brother of George1 and Abel.

Any assistance in this matter would be appreciated, we are hoping to get the history as complete as possible for my wife Wendy's father, who is now 85. Thanks in anticipation, kevin marsden.

Have a look at the IGI. There are some patron submissions that might provide food for thought. Do not believe those submissions - treat them as no more than clues.

Now you're in pre-civil registration territory, you need to turn to parish registers which you should be able to find at Essex Record Office or they may have been filmed by the Mormons. The Society of Genealogists may have something. You may also wish to check Essex FHS.

Hi Kevin,

far back as Josiah Cane born 1807 died 1888, from Chrishall. 1811 and George, b.1826.Are both Cane families in the 1841 village of Chrishall related? Your list above relates to those on page 10 but there is another Cane family on page 9. HO107/340/7 Foliio 8 Page 11.

If you look at this extract of marriages for Essex (prior to 1837 records) you will see that the Canes of Chrishall are related to the Pigg family by marriage on at least two counts:
http://essex1841.com/CensusologySearch.htm , search on Cane and on the resulting page, scroll half way down and you'll find a list of 15 marriages.

The 1841 census return for Chrishall also has 2 Pigg families on page 6 and 8. Post again if you don't have access to the 1841 and I will provide the details for you.

Hope this moves you along a little,

Best wishes

Brenda

Hello Kevin,
I have recently come accross your query concerning Josiah Cane of Chrishall.
Josiah's brother, Joseph Cane, is my great-great-grandfather so I have done quite a bit of work on this family. Their parents were George Cane (born 1763) and Sarah Sibley (born 1775 in Heyden), the whole family being
Joseph b 1801, George b 1802, Rebekah b 1804, Naarah b 1805, Josiah b 1806, Helpzibah b 1807, Jason b 1809, Abel b 1811, James b 1812, Sarah b 1816 and Thomas b 1818. The George Cane b 1763 died in about 1825 - I have a copy of his will - so Sarah whom you found in the 1841 census was a widow then. Joseph Cane's wife, Ann Pigg, was a sister of Josiah's wife, Sarah Pigg.

What I have for the children of Josiah and Sarah are:
Joseph b 1832 Elmdon, Abel, b 1834, Sarah Pigg b 1837, Thomas Sibley b 1839, Tubal b 1841, Philip b 1843, Henry b 1845, Lydia b 1847, William b 1849, George b 1852, Elizabeth Jane b 1855. I presume your wife is descended from Philip or Henry. I have quite a bit of information on this family - you may already have found out what I have listed above since your query in 2006. I would love to hear what you have.

Gwenda.
