Hello, my name is Laura Jane Stanford, and i am trying to locate family members from my fathers side of the family.
Surnames include: TOWE, EDWARDS, COUZENS & CLARKE.
My father is Barry Roland Towe, and he was born in Derby, UK on April 11th 1946.
His parents (my grandparents) are William Roland Towe and Edna June Towe (Edwards). Edna (my grandmother) was born on June 30th in approx. 1925 in Reading, UK. William (my grandfather) was born on Feb 18th in approx. 1920, and passed away on April 19th 2003.
They moved from Derby to Devizes, Wiltshire and had 4 children, Barry Towe (my father, later changed surname to Stanford), Stephen Towe, Linda Towe and Miranda Towe.
My grandmother, Edna Towe (Edwards) had parents most likely residing in Reading, UK. Her father (my great-grandfather) was called Walter Geofrey Edwards, and was married to Hilda Couzens (my great-grandmother). Edna also had siblings/brothers Dennis and Leonard.
My grandfather, William Towe had parents possibly born in approx. 1895 -1900. His father (my great-grandfather) was called Albert Towe, and was married to Bertha Mildred Clarke (my great-grandmother).
I have lost contact with my aunties and grandmother in England, and hope someone else can help expand my family tree, and help me get in contact with family members. As an only child, with no first cousins, I am searching for all the people I can to call family.
Thanks for your time, I hope you can help. Yours Faithfully, Laura.

Hi I have been having a look to see if I can help

William R Towe March qtr 1920 District Belper vol 7b page 1528.

Mothers maiden name Cozens or Cosens possible it could have been a 2nd marriage as this was just after the war and there were lots of widows. Not Clarke anyway.

I have had a look for Edna June Edwards but none came up for the 2 qtrs June and Sept 1925. Do you have a death for her or is she still living (hopefully).

I have also found 1 Albert Towe in Derbyshire aged 3 that's a possible his parents are William and Emma. There are 5 in England in 1901.

Walter Geofrey Edwards was born
June qtr 1902 District Reading vol 2C page 364

I think though you will have to get birth certificates to prove their parents.

Freebmd only goes up to about 1912 (or Ancestry)
1837.com will have all records 1837-2005 or when ever they release the lastest ones, but you will need to know where you are looking it could cost .10p to view a page (you can save them for looking at later, the more credit you buy the cheaper it becomes) this is just the reference details you will then be able to order the certificate with the details like I have put above for Walter and William. Make sure you put all the reference down as they don't look for that you will have to pay more. If they don't find the certificate on the page requested then you will get about 1/2 your money back, if you are not sure of the parents then don't put any down. To be sure you will need to see the census sheet and that is too early.

From mid 1911 they started to put the mothers maiden name in the Birth indexing and the partners name in the marriage indexing.

Good Luck

Irene

Hi Laura
As Irene says, you need to get the birth & marriage certificates to make sure you are not on the wrong lines. With the GRO references (General Register Office for England & Wales) you can order certificates yourself online through the government website at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate) They cost £7 each & usually take a week or so to arrive. I've had a look at censuses & other BMD info & think there may be some crossed wires already.
Apologies if I am repeating what Irene has already said, but I'll put this down in the order I found it:
William R. Towe born March quarter 1920 Belper registration district, volume 7b page 1528, mother Cozens (this is a GRO reference)

All this speculation may come crashing down like a pack of cards when you get the relevant BMD certificates! But at least it has given me something to do rather than watch the football. ;)

Looks like this is the Towe/Cozens connection:

Albert Towe married Bertha M. Cozens December Q 1918, Reading, vol 2e(or c), page 995.

But then there is this birth:
Edna J. Edwards born September Q. Reading volume 2c(or e) page 598, mother Cozens.

So were your family kissing cozens? ;)

Hi Laura
At this rate I think you may include every county in England in your family tree!
1901 census RG13/2301 folio 69 page 9, 8 Queen St, Yeovil, Somerset
Bertha Cozens, wife, M, 32, Hants. (Hampshire) Stockbridge
Leonard Cozens, son, 11 Hants. Stockbridge
Beatrice E. Cozens dau 10, Hants. Stockbridge
Rose Cozens dau 8 Somerset Yeovil
William H. R. Cozens son 6 Somerset Yeovil
Bertha M. Cozens dau 5 Somerset Yeovil
Rowland Cozens son 4 Somerset Yeovil
Hilda Cozens dau 1 Somerset Yeovil

It was very kind of your ancestors to use such uncommon first names! So I was right - your father's parents were 1st cousins. William Roland Towe was the son of Bertha Mildred Cozens (& Albert Towe). William Roland Towe's wife, Edna June Edwards, was the daughter of Bertha's sister, Hilda Cozens (& Walter Geofrey Edwards (?)- haven't checked this one yet).

G'day and Thanks you so much for finding all this out for me, i can't believe what you have discovered. It's great.

I can't wait to discuss with my father, about my grandparents possibly being first cousins.

My hope now is to use the information you have given me, to try and find any relations i don't know have existed.

Thanks again,

Greeting from Australia,

Laura.
