Hi everyone, i'm looking for help in deciphering 2 irish placenames i've found on the 1871 census for my irish ancestors.
To narrow down the area the 1881 census gives the place of birth as "roscommon county" for all the occupants that were born in ireland.
but the 1871 census has
matthew lynch born "longford" which is the next county
james lynch born "ballamaler"
bridget lynch born "ballamorconniel"

These last 2 names dont exist and i'm aware that the accent of my illiterate ancestors would have played some part in confusing the enumerator.
has anyone any ideas what or where these 2 areas are??

http://www.seanruad.com/ is the place to look for obscure Irish place names. On a quick search I could find lots of Bally-somethings in Co Roscommon, but none that convincingly match your two places.

Looking at Longford on the seanruad.com site there is nothing great but best suggestions seem to be Ballymore, Ballymahon, Ballinamore, Ballycloghan, Ballynamanagh, Ballymahon-Colehill

Thank you for the info and of course the attempts to decipher these towns.. I will have to go to ireland and ask if anyone knows "the lynch's" that should narrow it down.
but seriously i think it will reveal itself eventually,...
cheers
