I have found a James & Elizabeth Gates in 1881 census/dwelling: Broken Cross
Place: Rudheath, Cheshire. James occupation: blacksmith
James born abt. 1811...Elizabeth born about 1813.
Could someone be kind enough to see if they are in the 51/61 census with a son Frederick born 1846?
Thank you,
Sharon

Elizabeth Gates abt 1812 Davenham, Cheshire, England Wife

Thank you so much Carrie, that is the family from 1881, but sadly not the family that I am looking for unless for some reason Frederick changed his name when arriving in Canada in 1865.

Hi Everyone,

Just an addition to this thread, there is still a blacksmith at Broken Cross (Broken Cross Smithy), Rudheath probably the same one that James and Elizabeth GATES were at back in 1881

Regards
