I went to The National Archives (TNA) catalogue
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp
in the 'word or phrase' field entered

orphan AND sailors AND school

(exactly like that, use capitals for 'and')

and then searched - there were four hits.

The first hit in ED30 contains 188 files
The second hit in ED49 contains 13,195 files
I would think you'd find something useful in that lot

part 2.....

Then using the title of one of the docs from TNA's site,

Hampstead: Sailors' Orphan Girls' School

I pasted this into a search engine and got several hits, including:

institutions.org.uk/orphanages/LND/sailors_orphan_girls_school.htm"]http://www.institutions.org.uk/orphanages/LND/sailors_orphan_girls_school.htm

and

british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22657"]http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=22657

and

victorianlondon.org/publications/terriblesights-4.htm"]http://www.victorianlondon.org/publications/terriblesights-4.htm

A2A shows just one catalogue (at the London Metropolitan Archives) -

Reference: A/FWA/C/D/122/001
Sailors' Orphan Girls School and Home, later Royal Sailors Daughters School and Home (case 7313 or 4/1881): correspondence and papers
Creation dates: 1881-1946
Access Conditions
CLOSED UNTIL 2007

Scope and Content
116 Fitzjohns Avenue Hampstead

It doesn't really look as if there's much there of interest to you but you never know. "Papers" can mean so many things.

Don't be too alarmed by the access conditions - there are ways and means...

Just found the thread regarding the Sailors' Orphanage at Hampstead, London. Has anyone found any papers relating to girls in the 1891 Census. I too am interested in one such entry and wondered if there was any info regarding the girls' entry in the orphanage and when they left, and also how they came to be there.

Hi Claire
The "girl" I was looking for was a Martha Strutt born in 1877 at Paddington. I think I have found her in the 1891 Census at St John The Baptist Mission Home at St Woollos, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales. The family story relates that she had been previously in a Orphanage in London (probably Paddington) and I found the name of the Sailors' Orphanage at Hampstead, London. I have still not been able to track any paperwork down for this Orphanage - if anybody knows the whereabouts of the girls' entry & exit paperwork for any orphanages in the Paddington area, the information would be most welcome. Many thanks. Lesley.

I have no idea as to the extent of the records in the file, but TNA's catalogue shows school files for the Sailors' orpahns girls school Hampstead in ED30/57 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=2810859&CATLN=6&Highlight=%2CHAMPSTEAD%2CORPHAN&accessmethod=0)
