View Full Version : Vokes and Fox family Dublin

I am looking for information on my Grandmothers parents my Grandmother Mary Fox was born in Dublin in 1998 her Fathers name was Patrick I know he had at least one brother but I dont know what his name was and her Mothers name was Alice Vokes.
After my Grandmother married my Grandfather she moved to Wales
I would be grateful of any help because I cannot find any mention of the family anywhere

This (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Trinity_Ward/City_Quay/87734/) appears to be your family on the 1911 Dublin Census. There is also a Francis Vokes living in the household. Scroll down to the Household Return Page 1 to see the Census page.

If you also search on Vokes, you can find a John Vokes, same occupation as Francis, living nearby in a boarding house.

I'm not convinced that Fox and Vokes aren't simply variants of each other.

Fox Fawkes Faux etc...Vokes Vaux Voakes etc

Hi Peter,

I can't see that the similarity of the surnames matters here -the parents of Mary Fox were Patrick Fox and Alice Vokes. By the 1911 census Alice Fox was the (widowed) head of household. Francis Vokes is shown as her brother.

The names do sound similar I agree, but Vokes is more likely to be derived from the English 'folks', meaning people:
