I believe that this means that as she was poor, she got money from the parish council. (ie PC).

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. ;)

This is not to say you are wrong, but I did wonder if it might mean something similar, ie Parish Chest. Darnigold may have been buried with the expense covered by the Overseer of the Poor and the records kept in the Parish Chest. Just a thought.

That's an interesting thought Peter, and one I haven't heard of.

Re-reading my post, I realise that I hadn't made it clear that I thought it meant that the Parish paid for her burial, but I think Mary got the gist.

Does the entry definitely read 'Pc'? Could it be 'Pr' which I have seen in Norfolk registers as an abbreviation for 'poor'

Hi geoffers

It definately reads poor widow P.C.

So poor chest or parish council, either explain it.

Just to add to the possibilities, as this is 1789 ...

Between 1783 and 1794 there was a tax on parish register entries, from which the poor were exempt.

The relevant entries are sometimes noted in registers - with no real concistency, but somewhere along the line I have seen "Pauper Cert."

Don't want to muddy the waters, because I agree with the guesses in this case, but ...,
I just received in the mail a marriage certificate that states
"Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by me Signed: Thos. Fuller PC"

I assume that in this case PC stands for Parish Curate ? My first guess was Parish Clerk, but realized that a clerk would not be preforming a marriage service. Would a curate ?
Sorry, I'm not up on the jobs and duties of the COE being a Yank :)
