Can anyone help me on this one. A friend of mine is trying to find this out. The lady was last heard of in Clun and would have been over 80 when she died. A search of freeBMD has not found her.

"A search of freeBMD has not found her."

If she's born about 1920 and was over 80 when she died, then it won't. You are looking at something very recent, which FreeBMD do not cover at all, neither in the transcript nor in the images.

There are printouts at the FRC (and possibly other places?) but basically from 1984 onwards it's a computer database. 1837online have it, but as your birth date is a "circa" you may find it relatively pricey to search. I tried just putting the name in, no birth year, with death years 1998 (to allow for the circa birthdate) to 2004, and it tells me there are 16 results. If I put in 1920 as the birth year, it tells me there are no results, but there's no "plus or minus two years" option to narrow down the original sixteen.

I believe that those people across the pond also have it, but not in the free stuff.

Thanks Mythology :) I will pass your answer to the lady concerned and she can pay to look at the possibles. :D I am firmly back before 1891 in my database so do not have these problems :) She has internet access so can go into 1837 on line.

"she was born 25 Oct I am now told"

Aha.
Now we *may* be getting somewhere, but I hope the day and month are more accurate than the "born circa 1920" appears to be.

Using 16 units is a bit much for Scrooge here, but using a mere 1 unit is a different matter.

If I ignore the birth year and just put in 25 October as the birth date, and search 1995 (yes, I've widened it a bit as the info seems a bit iffy) to 2004, it tells me that there is *one* result, and clicking to see it gives me ...

MORTON, HILDA 25 October 1910 BRIDGNORTH 2001 May District No 7101
Reg No 14A
Ent No 298
Dor 501

It's plain Hilda and Bridgnorth, while not including Clun, is at least in Shropshire, which looks promising, so perhaps either the 1910 in the index is a clanger ... or your friend's "circa 1920" is *very* circa.

(Bit more after switching brain on)

There are two Hilda Morton birth entries in 1910 December quarter (Dudley 6c 89 and Wolverhampton 6b 534) so that would at least add up for a spinster.

She is the one born in Wolverhampton as far as my friend knows. She knew the lady was at least 80 when she died so that is why we decided on circa 1920. Thanks for using your precious units. Your generosity is much appreciated |cheers|
