I'm still somewhat of a novice at reading the 1841 census images but here goes:

I found the following William who looks promising -- unfortunately, he's not with his parents but he is in the household of a grocer:

Census: 1841: HO107/1042/8 Folio 6 Page 5
Address: Churchgate Street, St. Mary, Suffolk [Bury St. Edmunds]
-- John WATSON 41 Grocer N [for born in county]
-- Susan Do 45 Y
-- Robert Do 17 Y
-- Gros or Thos? Do 60 Independent N
-- Eliz. Do 65 N
-- Nathaniel POUDER 20 Maker N
-- Benj WALLACE M S [my guess is that this stands for male servant] Y
-- William STEWART 17 Ap Grocer N
-- William PLACE 13 M S Y
-- Mary MAYES 17 F S [female servant?] Y

HTH,
Trish

Martin,

I should amend my previous message to say that the William I gave you doesn't appear to be living in his parents' household. I suppose there's always the possibility that his father had died by 1841 and his mother remarried and he is listed in his step-father's household as a servant. I've seen similar listings in the census. But I doubt this is the case here.

I just did a search for William's father: a William PLACE in Suffolk born between 1780 and 1810 and the only hit I got was for a 45 year old [age could be rounded off] William Place in Lakenheath whose occupation is farmer. Wife is Elizabeth, 40 years old. Children are Isaac, 20 years old and Simeon, 10. [HO107/1027/12 Folio 22 Page 1]

A subsequent search for any PLACE, male or female, born between 1780 and 1810 didn't bring up any matches. All the PLACEes I found appear to be living in Mildenhall or Lakenheath.

Regards,
Trish

Thanks Trish,

I had found the dearth of PLACE in the time frame for William's parents. The 1841 reference looks promissing. I will have to locate the parish registers for possible baptisms 1828-1829. There is no sign of him in the IGI as far as I can see.

Thanks again,

Martin
