John Hutchings b 1812 in Combe Raleigh married Mary Ann ? b.1821 from Rewe. They then settled in Silverton and raised a large family who mostly stayed around the Silverton area.
I'm having real problems trying to find out anything about John and Mary Ann before 1851. I've found a parish record for a John Hutchings b 1812 and baptised in Upottery (which I think is only about 5 miles from Combe Raleigh) but apart from that nothing. One relative seems to think that Johns parents were William and Susanna who lived in Exeter - but I can find no record of either. The relative has a marriage certificate for a John and Mary Ann from 1839 in St Thomas, but it doesn't state any places of birth of either John or William and doesn't mention Susanna.
On one census Johns place of birth is said to be Combe Hanley (the others say Combe Raleigh)
I'm stuck..... can any one help shed some light.
