anyone have any information on the old gaol in the late 1700's early 1800's or know where I can go to find out - there is an unchecked peice on info on one of my ancestors saying he worked in the system but cannot find anyway of verifying this - any help would be gratefully received thanks

Have you tried Berkshire Record Office?

Hi - yes I have tried them via the phone they can only find information on the new jail built just after my man was there - I can not actually get there but a friend from London has offered but it would be helpful if I could direct her somewhere

You are right of course Peter. Like a lot of older persons my memory (and other parts of the grey matter) seemed to have switched to a need to know basis.

One old Reading gaol is still standing - now known as Greyfriars Church.
