This is really a follow on from my post here. http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11814

I have since received some additional certs and it all becomes more confusing.

Just want some opinions on what this chaps occupation was and any explanination for being a soldier in the census entires and a labourer in the BDM entries. There are some items that tie the census entries to some of the BDM entries, so I don't think I have two different people but might have. Could you be a part time soldier around this time ?

Year Source Age Occupation Birthplace
1891 Census 23 Soldier Stone Staffs
1891* Census 23 Gunner Royal Artillery Fradswell Staffs
1893 1st Wed Cert 26 Labourer
1901 Census 34 Soldier Fradswell Staff
1906 Wife dth cert General Labourer
1908 2nd Wed Cert 38 Sailor R.A Boat
1936 Daug Wed Cert Labourer
1941 Daug Wed Cert Builder
1942 Death Cert 74 General Labourer

* Two entires found in 1891 one at home and one at Barracks.

Thanks for looking.

I think that you should try to locate his service record at The National Archives, Kew - it may make things clearer.

Hi Geoffers

Think you are right, it is just finding the time to go round there.

Hi there, this information can be viewed online and downloaded for a very small fee as long as you know his service number (otherwise known as dog tag).
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?CatID=2&searchType=browsable&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1
Have used it myself, several times now.

Carrie :)

Hi Carrie

Thanks for the info. I wish I had his service number. Only really got his name and what is in the census to go on so I think it will have to be a visit the archives.

The wife has been wanting to visit Kew Gardens for ages. Might have to take her and get lost half way round ;-)
