Hi

I will start with a scenario: I live in Australia, and used an Australian source to find an Uncle. Found him, but detail was limited. I can't complain because his GGGrandmother's name was listed.

The Australian site gave the name Endicott. Harriet Endicott, born Twirton,Devon, 1813.

From a poorly copied Marriage Certificate, dated 1839 - The name Harriet Eddicett b 1813. Married William Fawcett 20.9.1839, caused me no end of difficulty being crossed up with Endicott.

I acquired a 10x loupe to magnify what I had. It is definately Eddicett.

Further enquiry gave me Harriet Eddicett - Birth 1813 - Tiverton, Devon.

Henry William Fawcett was born in 1815 in Reading, Berkshire.

Is there any way I can go back further on Henry William Fawcett
and his wife Harriet Eddicett?

Is there someone researching this same family?

Thanks for any help.
Lucy

Lucy,

I'm not researching this family but I took a quick look for them on earlier censuses and found the following:

Census: 1871: RG10/1402 Folio 32 Page 29
Address: St. Peters St 10, Burnham, Buckinghamshire
-- Henry FAWCETT Head Mar 48 Coal Merchant [born] Berks Reading
-- Harriet " Wife " 50 [born] Devon Tiverton
-- Harriet " Daur 19 [born] Midx London
-- Emily E " " 14 Scholar [born] " "

Harriet's and Henry's ages are off but the details are intriguingly similar to your FAWCETTs... any help?

Well, the plot thickens, Lucy...

Census: 1861: RG9/224 Folio 55 Page 4
Address: 6 Labour ?, St. Mary Mounthaw, Middlesex
-- Henry FAWCETT Head Mar 44 Clerk and Undertaker [born] Reading Berkshire
-- Harriett FAWCETT Wife Mar 49 Lex??ss [born] Tiverton Devonshire
-- Emma Lavinia Do Daur Un 19 Scholar [born] City of London Blind
-- Eliza Do Daur Un 15 Seamstress Do
-- Harriett Do Do Un 7 Scholar Do
-- Emily Elizabeth Do Do un 4 Scholar Do

This would appear to be the same family as in the 1871 census. Looks like the 1871 enumerator got the ages quite wrong...

This doesn't help you with going back further but at least it may fill in the middle if you don't already have this information.

Regards,
Trish

-- Hariet [sic] do Wife " 38 [born] Tiverton Devon
-- Henry do Son 10 Scholar [born] London City

I see that Harriett's and Henry's marriage record is on FreeBMD:

1839 Jul-Aug-Sep Quarter
City of London
-- Harriet EDDICETT
-- Henry FAWCET_
Volume 2 Page 106

This matches with what you have and confirms your interpretation of Harriet's surname.

However, a search of the 1851 to 1901 census information brings up no EDDICETTs whatsoever -- but there are a fair number of EDDICOTTs spread around England and quite a few ENDICOTTs born and/or living in Tiverton.

The 1851 census shows only one EDDICOTT associated with Tiverton -- a Thomas EDDICOTT born about 1826 in Bickleigh, Devon, working as a servant in Cadeleigh, Devon.

As for FAWCETT, there are a handful associated with Reading in most of the censuses. In 1851, there are only 2 who could potentially be Henry's father if he were still alive then:
-- William FAWCETT, an Ag Lab, born about 1792 in Thatcham, Berkshire and living in Reading St. Giles with wife Jane; and
-- Thomas FAWCETT, a widower and butterman, born about 1798 in Thatcham and living in Reading St. Mary.

Trish

Hello Trish

You have been amazing!

Will follow through.

Was saddened to see that Emma Lavinia was "blind".

This has given a a boost too:

Thank you most kindly.

I will get back to the forum if I hit a snag.

You are most welcome, Lucy.

I think Emma may have led a fairly normal life despite her blindness. There's a marriage record for her in FreeBMD:

1869 3rd Quarter, Pancras, London, Middlesex, Volume 1b Page 138
-- Emma Lavinia FAWCETT

However there's only one prospective bridgegroom listed along with Emma and another bride. A look-up on the 1871 census indicates that the other bride likely married the lone bridegroom. So no clue as to who Emma married...

But, still, I think I've found her in 1871:

Census: 1871: RG10/668 Folio 69 Page 3
Address: 7A Gosling [or Godling] St, Lambeth, London
-- John TURNER Head Mar 32 Weaver [of Hearth-rugs] [born] Cheshire, Macclesfield Blind
-- Emma L Do Wife Mar 28 Do [born] London Do
-- Alfred N Do Son 3w [born] Surrey, Lambeth

She's also on the 1881 census with husband John and children Sidney J. and Edith, living at 48 Vauxhall Street in Lambeth. I wonder what happened to Alfred? [Reference: RG11/0597 Folio 29 Page 10.] You can view the transcription for yourself at www.familysearch.org (http://www.familysearch.org/).

Sadly, it appears that Emma only lived to age 45:

FreeBMD
1887 1st Quarter St. Saviour Southwark, London, Surrey Volume 1d Page 31
-- Emma Lavinia TURNER, 45 years old

Hello Trish,

Once again, I must thank you.

One learns a lot about family. Often - the sad parts.

At least Emma Lavinia has normality in her life.

This is amazing stuff.
