My ggg grandfather, James Buckley, was born around 1829.

He features on the 1861 census RG9/2715 f44 p33

But for the life of me, I can't figure out what his place of birth is supposed to be. I don't agree with how it's been indexed, if only because I can't find any reference to a village of that name.

Does anybody have any ideas?

And while you're there, any ideas about his wife's name???

Many thanks!

It certainly looks like Whiten to me and Mace for the wife. The emunerator possibly could not read the house schedule and made his own stab(s) at the name and pob. Two possibilites for the pob are Whitby (Ellesmere) and Whitley (Knutsford area).

Hi Sharron,
Could be Witton spelled pheonetically, there were certainly Buckley families in the parish and surrounds at that time.

Sharron,

Your ggg grandfather James Buckley (born around 1829), have you got as far as indentifying other family members ?

I think I have found my gg grandfather Job Buckley (born around 1821), in what looks like the Audlem area. Could he be a brother ?

regards

David
