I have a reference in the 1861 Census for the Red Lion Inn, Washington for a Henry Floate who gives his place of birth as what for all the World looks like Vidinghove. I can't find a reference to the place as such. I've tried some variations but without luck. I also wondered whether it was a corruption of somewhere near to Hove, but again no luck. Any suggestions please?

Wild guess --- Pittington in Co Durham

(Nearest I can see to being distorted to Vidinghove ) Parloc program may be useful for more guesses..and other counties.

Do you have the Census ref ?

Perhaps ...hove may be ...house?

had a quick look on the 1861 census and the refs are - RG9/613 f88 p2 s10
it has definetly been transcribes as "vidinghove", sussex.

i went to genuki site and into the sussex area. here is the link for the sussex towns and parishes http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SSX/parishes.html

now there is a place call 'hove'. maybe there was a misunderstanding when the transcriber wrote down the birth place. if you click on hove from the above link it will take you to a map and highlight the town in yellow so that you can see where it is. http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SSX/Hove/index.php

On the 1851 census it is pidehave. On the IGI it is Piddinghoe.

so Piddinghoe it is, Just outside of Newhaven

:o Thanks Frank, but I should have said Sussex, forgot about Tyne & Wear.

Thanks Carrie. I think Mary has the answer.

Thanks Mary. When you say "Pidehave on the 1851 Census", do you have an entry for Henry? If so, may I please have the details?

Thanks again to all.
