I wonder if anyone can help sort this out?
My gg.aunt Elizabeth Mary Barton (born Seaview 1957) married George Jacobs Please (born 1858 Wootten) March Q 1882. He was a warden at Parkhurst prison in 1901.
My g.aunt, Elizabeth Sarah Barton (niece of Eliz Mary - brother's daughter) married George J Please in Dec Q 1936.
Family story says Elizabeth Sarah's husband was 'much older than she' and he died before my mother was involved with the family in 1940.
My 'Aunt Lizbeth' (Elizabeth Sarah) only ever referred to her husband as 'Mr Please'. Was this the same bloke?? Did he marry 2 generations of the same Barton family, both named Elizabeth?
 Sandra

George J Please death registered June Q 1939 aged 80 Vol 2a page 1362 at Blean, Kent (area associated with Barton family)

I do not if this is of any use. There was a death of Lizzy M PLEASE registered at Brentford 3a 274 march qtr 1935 aged 77 which ties in with the 1901 details.

Thanks, it certainly does look as though it fits.
I guess it looks like a certificate purchase might help. I don't suppose 'marrying her uncle' will be written on the certificate, but there might be some extra clue there.

 Well, now I know. George Jacobs Please, born Wootten in 1858, married Elizabeth Mary Barton, born Seaview 1857. She was the daughter of George Robert Barton 1823-1861, and Betsey Shiner, 1823-1862. They had children, Arthur Joseph, 1884-?. Emily Maude, 1893-?, Albert Victor Geroge, 1897-?, and Maggie Elizabeth, 1900-?. Elizabeth Mary died (Lizzy M PLEASE registered at Brentford 3a 274 march qtr 1935 aged 77 ).
George Jacobs Please then married Elizabeth Sarah Barton, born Kessingland Suffolk, registered Dec Q 1936. She was Elizabeth Mary's niece. She had been in service and presumably lived with her Aunt and Uncle prior to the Aunt's death. I cannot find any residence for her between 1901 and 1936 as yet, so this is conjecture.
George Jacobs Please died in 1939 in Blean, Kent. Elizabeth Sarah Please (Barton), my G Aunt Lisbeth, died in 1960 at Bromley. There were no children and my family had no knowledge of the original Please children.
Was it legal to marry your niece, even though the relationship was by marriage? Obviously this was not to her financial benefit as she spent the rest of her life living with her sister and brother in law at Herne Bay, Kent.
