View Full Version : Help with a photo on glass

I have a 'photograph' on glass (maybe there is a more correct technical term?). I would like to have some copies on paper. Can anyone advise how to go about this?

Also, it is currently kept in a black envelope with a silver coloured lining and has been for as long as I can remember. Is this the best method of storage to preserve it?

Thanks for any tips

Hi Genevieve,

If it were mine, I would copy it onto my computer using a scanner. If it is in a frame, remove that first so that the image is lying flat against the bed of the scanner. Once saved to your computer you can either print it yourself using photographic paper or take the saved image to a commercial dealer (such as a large high street chemist or photographers) who will print it for you.

Personally I scan everything into my computer: jewellery, kids drawings, swimming badges, school Christmas Play programmes, newspaper articles, knitting patterns etc. I have scanned all my mother's old photographs, prayer cards, certificates, wedding breakfast menus, the receipt for her engagement ring and all sorts of other personal things which may be mislaid, (or stolen).

You could also take a photograph of the picture using a good quality camera or have this done professionally.

Good luck with your picture, you seem to be taking such good care of it, but it seems a shame you can't have it out on display and enjoy it.

You might try 'phoning your local County Record Office to ask for advice.

I have one of my great great grandmother c1850 (in a frame) but which I also inadvertently managed to crack. I managed to get it "stabilised" by a museum conservator who I found by asking other conservators, and online, called Susie Clark (She lives in Yorkshire, is the main specialist in her field apparently, and has her own web site). I would be very careful of dismantling yours at all. She repaired mine by managing to glue the glass together and cleaned it up quite well but did not want to disturb it any more than that.. I have actually managed to scan mine in the frame and am quite pleased with it. If you would like her email address for advice send me a private message and I can send it to you but she is a busy lady and needed a bit of "encouragement" to get involved initially.

Regards

Jane

The picture I use for my avatar here is a glass photo. It's about 2 inches by 3 inches, and my cousin had it in a brown envelope! It's the only one in the family and when I scanned it at very high resolution, and then lightened it, the detail really came out. The original is very dark.

Is it a photo or a negative? If the latter, the easiest thing to do is to get someone with a darkroom to make a contact print for you.
Alternatively, you need to find someone with one of the older types of negative scanner with a second light source which sits above the material - we have an Hp at work (I THINK a 4700) which a very patient lady used to scan the 27000 glass negs in the archive I care for (it took her months!). Once it's scanned, you can do what you like with the file.
Finally (and possibly easiest) take it to a proper photography shop, not one of these mass printing places. They should have the kit to copy it.
