Can anyone give me a clue as to how I would find out the origins of the surname Gardiner in Ireland, specifically Co down.

Dear Ollydot,

Try this link for starters:
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm

If you put Gardiner in the search box it will return a number of interesting facts about your Irish surname, including distribution of the name at various times in the 19th century. It is free to get to this stage but to go any further you are paying US dollars but you can get an example of what you are paying for before you commit.

Best wishes

Here's another site that returns about 46 hits for Gardiner from Griffith Valuations 1863/4 and various 1901 Co Down census abstracts:
http://www.caora.net/

Click on Names Database along the bottom of the introductory paragraph. Then either search on Gardiner in the top search engine or open the name filter below to G and search alphabetically for all names beginning with G etc. This site is free and you can prepare items for download/print by selecting Add to Report Basket at the top of the results page.

This is another good site on which you can view selective indexes for births, marriages, census, Griffiths Evaluations and Tithe Appointments and finally order copies of birth records/certificates etc, with full details if required. It can take a while to download but be patient and you results will appear:

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi_main.cfm#Counties

This returns 3 marriage records and 11 birth/baptism records for Gardiner in Armargh, the nearest county to Down with records available on this site, but beware - they include name derivatives in with the results so they are not all Gardiner. You'll get many more hits if you search on all counties.

Carrie,
How did you get irish genealogy to also search for the siblings and parents marriage?

i didn't request a search on siblings or marriage, but i was told they had searched the same resource for the info. i don't know if it depends on the area and the individual researcher
