View Full Version : Help with Census lookup - Somerset please.
Hello,
I was wondering if there is anyone who has access to Census records for Somerset. I live in Australia and would love to offer help with Australian records in return for help for my research.
Appreciate hearing from someone in need.

1881 census is free for anyone at family search dot org.
The index for 1901 is free at 1901online. You need to pay to see the images.
1841 is at British origins but you need a subscription to use it. 1871 at Brit Origins is not yet available for Somerset.
1861 & 1891 might be available for free at FreeCen - not sure how complete they are yet.
And I have 1851 on CD. :)
Please state names, parish and the year that you are looking for.

FreeCEN has not been very good for me there is little info available. I joined Ancestry and for a yearly fee have access to 1851-1901 for England and Wales viewing both index and original images.
The site address for the free 1881 census is http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

I'm looking for help with 1841 - 1901 Census Somerset, England, with the name HOLCOMBE
Just to give an idea of the problems with such general lookup requests - searching the 1881 census index for Holcombes born in Somerset produces a list of 146 people. With 7 sets of censuses and supposing 100 hits per census gives a list of 700+; which is perhaps asking rather a lot of others generosity.
I'd suggest that you narrow down the search to specific people; if they all come from one part of Somerset, then maybe widen things out to include all Holcomb(e)s. As Carrie has said, give some names and places and I'm sure that someone will try to assist.
As well as sources mentioned, Archive CD Books sell facsimiles of the 1841 and 1861 census plus directories; other companies also sell the census on CD.

Hello Geoffers,
Actually I have the set of 1881 cBritish Census.
I don't really want hundreds of look ups, but it was easier writing it like that, so as not too confuse anyone. I don't want to be a nuicence to anyone.......far from it!!!!

Hello again Geoffers,
I also should mention that I live in a very small country town in Australia, poulation 1100 people, with no access to records except for the internet and my 1881 census. The nearest research centre is over 60 miles away, and besides that, genealogy is so popular now that appointments to use the resources are very hard to get.

Hi Hazel,
Asking for lookups dosen't make you a nuisance. If people didn't want to do lookups they wouldn't do them.
I asked for help on this site, I had a very large brick wall, and some clever soul managed to break my wall down within half an hour, so now to repay the help I received, I do lookups, and try to help people to the best of my ability.
Now if anybody manages to help you, you can do the same as me, and help another. I'm sure there are many people that need Australian help, even if it just be geographical, or local knowledge.
I personally do not as none of my ancestors got caught!! |angel|

Hi Mary,
Thanks for your input.......it's exactly how I feel, and I have already given help to another researcher. You have made me feel a lot better.
I do hope I haven't offended anyone else with the way I wrote my query.

Hi Hazel,
Im sure you haven't offended anybody.
If you want help then post the information that you have and I'm sure there will be lotsa enthusiasts who will do look ups.
INFO: names dates of birth, occupations, places of birth, places of marriage, these all help otherwise we are looking blind and that is tiresome.

You're not being a nuisance; but as has been mentioned, it's easier to look for specific people rather than a a name in general.
Why not add some detail to your request so that someone might be able to assist, maybe mention some names, places and dates? You may be lucky and someone who is researching the same family may respond.
There are lots of helpful people on these forums who like to see others acheiving something with their research; or to be able to point them in the right direction.
