My local newspaper recently published an article describing some specimens of graffiti found at a 15th century estate during renovation work. A total of 8 scrawls were found on the interior walls of a stable block at Spains Hall, Finchingfield, Essex and some are thought to have been made over 150 years ago.

Pictures showing a drawing of the outside of a stable block and the signatures of Henry Gillman 1851, along with Walter Chapman Dec 4th 1898 were also published. The owner states that Walter Chapman was a stable lad at the Hall and lived in the nearby village of Wethersfield. She is keen to find out more about them both. The writing is in an area being transformed into offices and will be left exposed.

I found nothing in any of the census years for a suitable Henry Gillman/Gilman resident in Essex.

A 28yr old Walter Chapman shows up in the 1901 census, living in Finchingfield with occupation given as Horsekeeper on Farm. In 1891 he appears as an Ag Lab living with his uncle's family in Finchingfield. They are all farm employees at Blue Gate Hall, Finchingfield.

Does anyone want to claim these two likely lads for their own?!! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/12_3_47.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxdm006AXGB)
