Hello All
My Gt,Gt, Grandfather was killed as a result of an Accident in 1865 while travelling between Hartlepool and Sunderland, he was on his way to the Training ship HMS Active.
He was in the Royal Naval Reserve, would there have been a Pension for his family and if so would there be records both of his Accident and a possible Pension for his widow.

Regards and thanks
Allan Robson

Having browsed N.A.M Rodger's book it appears that casualty returns which may record his death at TNA are included in:

ADM104/144-149 (all ranks)
and
ADM154/1-9 (ratings and marines)

But for accidents, local newspapers are often the best source of detail.

Pension records to widows and orphans are more complicated, it deepnds on his rank, but there seem to be quite a few types of record in ADM23. I suggest looking though TNA's research guides http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp
and look for the Royal Navy entries.
