I have a Marriage Certificate for my gg grandparents who were married in Newhaven, SSX in 1859. I need some help in trying to trace the bride's family.

The bride is Isabella MOCKFORD age 23 (i.e. born abt 1836). There is an IGI entry for the christening of an Isabella MOCKFORD on 23 Jun 1836 in Newhaven, SSX, and the parents are given as David Mockford and Sarah. The father David MOCKFORD matches the father on Isabella's Marriage Certificate. So far so good.

I have a note of a marriage of a David MOCKFORD to Sarah Ann AVIS on 20 Jul 1833 in Newhaven (I've lost the source of this info .... tut, tut!!).

The problem is that there appear to be two David & Sarah MOCKFORD families in the Newhaven area in the 1830s onwards, and I can't tell one from the other.

I tried searching the 1861 Census on the 1837-Online website, but turned up a blank for David and Sarah MOCKFORD in Newhaven, which is strange as the marriage was only 2yrs earlier. Can anyone help with 1841/51 Census to see if they can find one or both of the David and Sarah family units (hopefully one also has a daughter Isabella).

Many thanks, and any other ideas would be wonderful.

John

I can find a David & Sarah in both 1851 & 1861, but no sign of Isabella. Who did Isabella marry? Have you found Isabella & her husband in the 1861 census? What was the occupation of Isabella's father on her marriage certificate?

Thanks Wirral ..... David MOCKFORD's occupation in 1859 was "Brewers Labourer". Good news if you have found them in both 1851 & 1861. Would you mind giving me all their family details (I find tracking their children in later years often turns up connections to other relatives).

Isabella married James REED, and thanks I have all their Census details from 1861 through to 1901 & also James in 1841/1851 . Incidentally, James REED lived to the age of 91 ... imagine the changes he saw in his lifetime.

Hi John
Definitely your family. :) One of the girls' names had been squeezed in later in the 1861 census & I couldn't work out what it said. Then I looked at the 1871 census for Isabella & there was her niece. |woohoo|

This is wonderful ..... thanks so much Wirral.

I have checked off all the children on the census, and they match exactly with data I have. "Asenalte" is actually "Ascenath" .... appears repeatly in the family! The grandson also matches.

I haven't got my data notes handy, but I have some additional children which I need to check and may get back to you.

Many, many thanks
John
